Nation State Game
Magic Vs. Bird - The 1979 NCAA Championship Game (Full Frame) The Magic-Bird show is born. Everybody wanted it. Everybody was talking about it. And more people watched it unfold on national television than any college game before or since. On March 26, 1979, in the Special Events Center at the University of Utah, Magic Johnson squared off against Larry Bird for the first time. One year later, they would take their show to the NBA. But on this night the dream showdown between the two best players in the country was on college basketball's grandest stage-the NCAA Championship game. Indiana State, the lesser known school in the Hoosier State, came into the contest riding a 33-game winning streak thanks to the extraordinary skills of Bird. Johnson was just as impressive, and Michigan State had other college standouts alongside him such as the high flying Greg Kesler, hot shooting Terry Donnelly and the powerful Jay Vincent. The great efforts and teamwork of Bird, Bobby Heaton, Carl Nix and the rest of the Sycamores kept them competitive, but in the end Spartans won the game 75-64. The Magic-Bird duel is still as captivating now as it was then. This DVD contains the complete 1979 Michigan State vs. Indiana State game, with coverage from NBC Sports.
The Only Game: Football and Our Times by James Walvin, Surpassing even the Olympics in terms of revenue, Soccer's annual turnover is at present $375 billion worldwide. Millions of British are passionate about soccer or football, and a large and rapidly growing number of Americans are now just as avidly following England's "Premiership football." With more than 80 illustrations, this is an up- to-date look at the English national pastime, football, with its a noble past, extraordinary present and an unimaginable future. Looks at mad managers, ridiculous salaries, bizarre player trades, violence, racism and nationalism Explores the "hero culture" and the effect and influence of TV and satellite coverage. From its humble origins in the late 19th century, the game of football has reached far beyond the field itself to become the most lucrative and the most popular sport in the world. Yet little more than a decade ago, English football was in a state of terminal decline, pockmarked by disasters, plagued by hooliganism and tainted by racism. What has happened to change football so dramatically? The Only Game is the first book to present a broad historical sweep of the game, harnessing the incredible events of the last ten years. Jim Walvin explores in detail the years of violence, racism and ultimately tragedy, on football's crumbling terraces during the 1970s and '80s and then goes on to show how the game has been transformed since the formation of the Premier League in 1992. The marriage of football and BskyB television saw dizzying amounts of money flooding into the game and as the players have become millionaires with celebrity status, the fans have returned to the game in huge numbers, en route buying football merchandise on an epicscale. The Only Game also looks into how the British game has been saved not only by the massive influx of cash but also by becoming more cosmopolitan, embracing the skills of foreign players and relishing in our success in international competitions.
